NEVER attempt electrical repairs yourself. Always call an electrician.
GFCIs (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) are safety devices. Test them monthly by pressing the test button and confirming that the power shuts off.
If an appliance or other fixture fails, first check that it is plugged in. Second, check the GFCI or the circuit breaker in the electrical panel.
If a GFCI or circuit breaker trips, always turn it completely off then completely on to reset it.
GFCI reset buttons are not on all GFCI outlets. GFCI outlets with reset buttons are usually located in garage, baths, kitchens, and mechanical rooms.
ALWAYS check your GFCI or circuit breaker prior to calling the electrician. Failure to do so may result in a service charge to you from the electrician.
Do not overload circuits with too many plugs entering one circuit.
If an outlet in a bedroom does not work, check the wall switch.
Vacuum dust from smoke detectors periodically.
Replace smoke detector batteries at least every six months.
Never plug an appliance or other fixture that needs a continuous flow of electricity into a GFCI outlet.
